SFAI 150 | A Spirit of Disruption | Exhibition

SFAI 150 | A Spirit of Disruption

On view: March 19, 2021—July 3, 2021
Walter and McBean Galleries and Diego Rivera Gallery, SFAI—Chestnut Campus
Curated by Margaret Tedesco and Leila Weefur

The San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2021 with A Spirit of Disruption, an exhibition that reflects on the school’s profound and sustained influence on contemporary art and highlights the contributions of generations of diverse artists and individuals often overlooked in the historical narrative of SFAI. A Spirit of Disruption includes the work of more than thirty alumni and faculty from the 1960s to the present; a dynamic media installation drawn from SFAI’s vast archive; and a section dedicated to artist model Florence “Flo” Wysinger Allen, the subject of countless paintings, sculptures, and drawings made at the school from 1933-1997.

Also launching in conjunction with the March 19th exhibition opening and anniversary day is a 10-episode podcast and web series, created by the exhibition’s curators, that reveals new stories and old gleaned from the archive.

Founded in 1871, generations of important artists, scholars, and thinkers from around the world have been educated and have taught at SFAI, formerly the California School of Fine Arts. This spirited and often unruly community established SFAI as a microcosm of the Bay Area art world—a place dedicated to the interdisciplinary, where ideas and education reach beyond formal boundaries. This radical creativity played a central role in many influential contemporary art movements, including Abstract Expressionism, Bay Area Figuration, Color Field, California Funk, and the Mission School, affirming the school’s long-standing impact on the international art world.

A Spirit of Disruption features a selection of artworks and archival materials that celebrate the ethos and expansive ecosystem of the institution. Curated by longtime SFAI employee and educator Margaret Tedesco together with recent faculty member Leila Weefur, whose first curatorial project for SFAI was bringing the work of contemporary Black artists into a 2019 exhibition about the Black Panthers, A Spirit of Disruption both embraces and takes a departure from the school’s wide-ranging history, advancing a new breadth of perspectives past, present, and future.

Open Studios 2020

It's our pleasure to invite you to our first open studios in our newly constructed building in East Oakland.  For the past year, artists Lauren Szabo, Pablo Manga, and I have settled into our beautiful new studio spaces, and springtime feels like the right moment to open our doors to the public for the first time.

Please join us to see new work, work in progress, and to enjoy refreshments and good conversation.

Where: 2500 Foothill Blvd, Oakland, Ca 94601

When:  Saturday March 21st,   12pm-6pm

A bit about us -

Pablo Manga

Pablo makes abstract compositions — layered monochromes, undulating horizons and destabilized grids — using semi-transparent adhesive tape as a painting medium.  Through geometric abstraction and the interaction of color, he explores phenomena of perception, joy and meditative experience.  He shows with Hang Art gallery, including recent shows in San Francisco and at SCOPE Miami Beach, and is currently an artist in residence at Kala Art Institute and in Root Division’s MFA Never show.

Lauren Szabo

Lauren Jade Szabo is a Los Angeles born artist who lives and works in Oakland, CA. She graduated with a BFA in Illustration from California College of the Arts with distinction, and received an MFA Painting Fellowship from the San Francisco Art Institute. Szabo's work is grounded in painting and explores the friction between civilization and nature.

Evan Holm

Evan utilizes wood, steel, ink, plaster, electronics, and motors to generate large scale immersive environments.  The work explores themes orbiting a relationship in better harmony with the natural world.   He has shown throughout the Bay Area, including SFMOMA, San Jose Museum of Art,  the Contemporary Jewish Museum,  and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.

The Tracked Project Performance Showcase II

Join us on Friday, March 13 from 8pm-11pm in San Francisco

Art - Live Performances - Music - Poetry - Book Sale - Social Practice - Participatory Poster Making - Bar with Event Inspired Drinks

FULL FRONTAL is a one-night-only showcase of site-specific performance artworks and contemporary art installations by over 30 emerging and established local Bay Area artists. The event builds community, engages the local public, and transforms a rare underutilized industrial building into a thrumming hive of action-oriented artworks and installations. Looking at how we can centralize the body in action and installation art, this event presents multimedia video projections, live performance, body actions, installations, poetry and participatory poster printmaking.

Ongoing periodically throughout the night is a choreographed and improvisational contemporary movement performance by Lauren Szabo and collaborators named The Other is Thyself , a new iteration of her acclaimed Tracked Project. The concept explores pairs of performers travelling the length of the 100’ long gallery space, falling in and out of movement mirroring choreographies. Costumes polarized with blue on one side and orange on the other, these dancers move in a range of speeds from slow to fast, and phase in and out of synchronization between improvisational and choreographed fragments. The work touches on concepts on a spectrum of otherness, othering, and unity as seen through complimentary colored painted performers.
